One of our favourite things about the Mid Sussex Reading Challenge is hearing what everyone has been reading! In January we all read a book that has been adapted into a film, and three local readers got in touch to let us know what they thought of their first challenge reads.

Claudie from Burgess Hill
Francine Rivers – The Masterpiece

Very good book , I really liked the story. It is a love story, a redemptive love story, a probing tale that reminded me that mercy can shape even the most broken among us into an imperfect yet stunning masterpiece.

Barry from Burgess Hill
Mario Puzo – The Godfather

This was a thrilling read right from the start. At first, 595 pages seemed a daunting task but I couldn’t put it down and completed it in just over a week! The workings of a mafia family, including the highs and lows of the Corleone family, were fully explored. I’d definitely recommend this book. Brilliant!

Louisa May Alcott – Little Women/Good Wives

I read these books several times as a child/teenager and recently saw the film which I thought was slightly confusing as it did not give much detail about certain parts of the story. The style of writing in the book is very old fashioned by today’s standards but appropriate for the era in which it was set. The individual girls are interesting in their diversity as I also have four daughters who have several similarities to each other.
I would like to see the film again so I can see what was omitted or added.
