Book Review: Chosen Ones by Veronica Roth

As part of the Mid Sussex Reading Challenge, this month we’re reading books recommended by friends or librarians. We’ve loved hearing all your suggested reads in our Facebook group, and we’re always posting reviews and recommendations on our reading challenge blog.

Rose from East Grinstead Library recommends Chosen Ones by Veronica Roth – the first adult novel from the author of the bestselling Divergent series. The book follows five young heroes who were brought together to defeat an enemy called The Dark One – but ten years later, it seems The Dark One’s reign didn’t actually end. Check out Rose’s review below!

Chosen Ones is a world bending adventure following the aftermath of an epic clash between the five Chosen Ones and The Dark One, and how they learn how to survive after their purpose has been fulfilled. Interestingly, Veronica Roth has pieces of writing within this book stylised to look like newspaper reports or documents, which I really quite enjoyed as I’ve never seen anything like that in a book before.

All five of the Chosen Ones have their own problems to deal with in this post apocalyptic world, which isn’t helped by the fact that three of them are teleported into an alternate reality, which has recognisable landmarks from their own world but for the most part is changed beyond all recognition. The other nice thing about it is that the author constantly turns your understanding of the characters on their heads from chapter to chapter, so one minute you might like a character and then three chapters later you’ll end up hating them!

I can really recommend this book. It’s easy to read, very hard to put down and you’ll be after more once you’ve turned the final page.

Reserve your copy of The Chosen Ones to borrow for free from your local library by visiting our library catalogue.
