Recommended Reads for September

We can’t quite believe we’re already two thirds of the way through the Mid Sussex Reading Challenge! But now that it’s September, we can move onto one of the themes we were looking forward to most – the banned book!

The reading challenge theme for September is:

Read a banned book

Our library staff have come up with a list of suggested banned books below – these are books that have been banned anywhere in the world at any point in time. You’ll also find loads more suggestions on the Banned Books Week website, or check out the Banned Books Youtube channel for lots of videos on challenged books. What will you be reading this month?

If you’re looking for inspiration, why not try:

George Orwell – 1984
Stephen Chbosky – The Perks of Being a Wallflower
Ray Bradbury – Fahrenheit 451
Margaret Atwood – The Handmaid’s Tale
D.H. Lawrence – Lady Chatterley’s Lover
John Green – The Fault in Our Stars
Erich Maria Remarque – All Quiet on the Western Front
Dan Brown – The Da Vinci Code
Harper Lee – To Kill a Mockingbird
J.K. Rowling – Harry Potter & the Philosopher’s Stone
Alice Walker – The Color Purple
Alduous Huxley – Brave New World
Lewis Carroll – Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland
Toni Morrison – Beloved
Stephen King – Carrie
Khaled Hosseini – The Kite Runner
John Steinbeck – Of Mice and Men
Milan Kundera – The Unbearable Lightness of Being
Maya Angelou – I Know Why the Caged Birds Sings
Mary Shelley – Frankenstein
J.R.R Tolkien – The Lord of the Rings

You can request any of the books above to collect from your local library by visiting our library catalogue, or if you’d like us to pick out something else for you, fill out or Staff Select form and our librarians will get on the case!

Let us know what you’ve been reading recently by sending in a book review, posting in our Facebook group or tweeting us @WSCCLibraries using the hashtag #MidSussexReadingChallenge.

I’ve read over half of this list and it does seem so surprising that they were banned at some point. I have chosen and started The Well of Loneliness by Radclyffe Hall which I have long intended to read. At 484 pages, I fear it is overlong as it is fairly dull and slow-paced at the moment. I will stick with it.
